Calculate My Roof Size
Multiply your house length by your house width to get the area. (For example, 40 feet x 30 feet = 1,200 square feet.) Next, multiply the area by your roof’s pitch. (1,200 x 1.05 = 1,260 square feet.)
Acreage Calculator – Measure the area of a plot of land
The easiest way to measure the acreage of a plot of land is to start by entering an address that is associated with the plot of land you need the area of. In rural areas where an address may not be available, you can enter the cross street or even the GPS coordinate of a point on the land. For GPS coordinates be sure to enter the latitude followed by a comma then the longitude ex. (41.87811, -87.629798). In any case this will place a marker that you can use as a reference point to draw the area on the map. Once you are finished drawing, the area calculator will display the area of the shape above the map.
How to use the Google Maps area calculator tool to measure a roof
Special precautions must be taken when measuring the area of a roof. The images that appear on Google Maps are often at a slight angle, which combined with the angle of a roof can cause errors. For this reason it is best to outline the roof at points which are all at the same elevation. On a simple house for instance, you would only click on the corners of the roof and not on any points along the peak as that would cause an error. After measuring the area of the footprint you can estimate the actual roof area based on the angle of the roof. Similarly, if you're using the area calculator tool to measure a roof with multiple levels, you should do the individual sections separately. The Google Maps area calculator is not 100% accurate. Do not rely on this tool as your only resource in making important decisions.

Begin Measuring Your Roof
- Frame your home back to the top shot.
- Click the ruler icon on the left side of your screen.
- Switch the unit of measurement to feet.
- Click on a starting and stopping point, and you’ll get an estimated measure of distance.
- Start logging in your measurements.
To find your roof’s total square footage:
- Measure the length and width of each plane on the roof (including dormers) then multiply length times width.
- Add the square footage of each of the planes together.
Measure the base area of your property:
That will be the roof base width. Then, measure the distance of the other side of the structure from the edge of the eave to the other. That will be the roof base length. Multiply those figures together to get an estimate of the base area for the roof structure.
What’s the pitch of a roof?
Roof pitch (or slope) tells you how many inches the roof rises for every 12 inches in depth. An Example of a roof pitch would be a “6/12 pitch” which means that the roof rises 6” for every 12″ inward towards the peak (or ridge). There are two suggested ways to measure a roof pitch. Follow Us!
Is a 4/12 roof pitch good?
A slope of 4:12 is most commonly considered the lowest slope for “standard shingle installations”. Most manufacturer and industry recommendations require, or at the very least recommend, special underlayment or other considerations on roofs between 2:12 and 4:12. Learn more
Can drones measure roofs?
Drones present a unique opportunity for getting a clear view of your rooftop and allowing you to get precise roof measurements. A variety of roof measuring applications and programs already take advantage of high-resolution drone imagery to get accurate roof measurements.
Can drones measure distance?
Similar to the method for measuring height, a typical drone can also be used to give a “close-enough” distance measurement. On the screen of the controller, there is usually a reading for distance, and this would mean the distance of the drone from the controller, and presumably from where you are standing.
What is the linear feet of a 12×12 room?
Multiply the length times the width of the room to get the room square footage. 12 ft x 12 ft = 144 sq. ft. So the total linear footage of the 1 x 12 boards is found by multiplying 5 (boards) by 6 (feet) which equals 30 linear feet.
